In this time-lapse art video you can follow one way to draw realistic hair.
For this drawing I used a 4B pencil and started off with very loose pencil marks. The aim in the first few marks is to get an impression of the form and direction of the hair and the shapes you can see. The key is to start with these basic shapes, looking all the time and drawing what you see rather than what you think should be there. Over time a structure of the head and the hair appears and then you can work up the tone, shading light and dark. Towards the very end of the drawing is the time to add the details. This might seem odd, but most times in a tonal drawing, of hair or anything else, the details you can clearly see at the beginning of your drawing are the last things that you draw. So for most of the drawing you are really drawing the things that are a little hidden, the structure and connections. There are more of my online art resources here:
