The Rinnegan (輪廻眼, Rinnegan, literally Eye of Saṃsāra) is one of the three great Dōjutsu along with the Sharingan and Byakugan and considered the most powerful among them,[4] who first appeared in a member of the Ōtsutsuki Clan. Users of the Rinnegan are said to be sent from the heavens to become a God of Creation that will stop the disorder of the world or a God of Destruction that will reduce everything to nothing. The Rinnegan is characterized by its wave pattern, which runs the length of the eyeballs, with thin grayish purple irises and sclerae. History The Rinnegan first manifested as a Kekkei Mōra inherited by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, as a lower variation of his mother Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s Rinne Sharingan. In the anime after nearly losing his brother Hamura Ōtsutsuki, Hagoromo was able to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan and at the same time awaken the Rinnegan.[5] With his Dōjutsu, Hagoromo was able to save the world from the Ten-Tails and create Ninshū, which would be the precursor to Ninjutsu. Thanks to all of his contributions to the world, Hagoromo was called and revered as the Sage of Six Paths, rising mythologically through the centuries along with the Rinnegan,[6] managing to become considered a legend by many, and even when the Rinnegan was proven to exist, it was attributed to it being just a mere mutation. In the Shinobi World, the Rinnegan would be able to awaken by combining the Chakra of Indra Ōtsutsuki and Asura Ōtsutsuki, sons of Hagoromo, thus creating the Chakra of his father,[8] or simply receiving chakra from Hagoromo himself.[9] Black Zetsu spent centuries attempting to accomplish this by manipulating the Indra and Asura Transmigrants into awakening the Rinnegan.[10] and it wasn’t until Madara Uchiha’s time as Indra’s Transmigrant, that he implanted the cells of Hashirama Senju who was the Asura Transmigrant.[8] However, Madara’s Sharingan did not transform into the Rinnegan until decades later near the end of his natural lifespan, apparently restoring the vision lost in his right eye from the use of the Izanagi.[10] Later, Madara would use it to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path from the Moon and use it as a catalyst for Hashirama’s cells to extend his life, then transplant his Rinnegan to a very young Nagato without him realizing it, and who, moreover, would use it effectively due to his Uzumaki lineage. After Nagato’s death, Obito Uchiha obtained the Rinnegan by transplanting Nagato’s left eye, having lost his left Sharingan in his battle against Konan while using the Izanagi, however, only one was implanted due to being unable to control it. the power of both eyes at once, deciding to hide the right one.
